A. Ultrasound scanning is a safe and painless way of actually seeing a baby in the womb. An ultrasound examination takes only 15 minutes and requires no special preparations on the mother's part. During the exam, a moving sonogram image is displayed on a video screen so the mother can see her unborn baby's features. When the examination is over, the mother receives a VHS videotape of the examination, with audio of the doctor's explanation of the sonogram images, at no extra charge.
A. Ultrasound scanning is perfectly safe. In the 20 years it has been used, there is no conclusive evidence that it has caused harm to a mother or her baby. No needles are used in the examination - only silent, low energy sound waves. Nor are there ever any unpleasant or harmful side effects from an ultrasound scan.
A. Baby's Health. Most expectant parents are concerned about the health of their unborn baby. Ultrasound scanning allows the doctor to affirm that the baby is healthy or to spot possible problems early in the pregnancy.
Boy or Girl? Another benefit of ultrasound scanning is its ability to identify whether the baby is a boy or a girl. With offices in Palo Alto, CA and Blaine, WA, Koala Labs uses a patented FASA sm (fetal anatomic sex assignment) scan technology that is accurate and reliable as early as the tenth week of fetal development. Sonogram results are available immediately.
According to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine (October 20, 1983), the technique of using sonogram images to determine whether an unborn baby is a boy or a girl was originally developed in conjunction with genetic amniocentesis. Using ultrasound scanning to observe the sex/gender of an unborn baby, however, is completely accurate as a stand-alone technique.
Koala Labs is an independent private ultrasound medical practice with offices in Palo Alto, CA and Blaine, WA. It uses only a licensed physician to perform the ultrasound examination. (FASA sm ultrasound examinations are not done by ultrasound technicians at Koala Labs.) The ultrasound examination includes a genetic health evaluation. It is not usually necessary to undergo genetic amniocentesis to check the health of the unborn baby. Additional health testing can be obtained by choosing to have a test on the mother’s blood and to have a new screening test for Down syndrome and trisomy +18 Ultra-Screen®.
Bonding. Parental bonding may begin from the time a woman learns she is expecting a child. Learning whether that child will be a boy or a girl helps parents to bond with their unborn baby.
